Nattvandrarna
Berns supports the charity Nattvandrarna. Operating across Sweden, Nattvandrarna is a democratic, non-profit organisation made up of local groups and associations. Their volunteers patrol the streets in their yellow jackets, providing adult role models, sympathetic support and a reassuring presence for young people who are out and about at night. Having the volunteers around also prevents criminal activity such as vandalism, violence and drug abuse. Photographer: Jeppe Wikström |
The Hunger Project
Berns supports the Hunger Project. Through coaching, training and access to microfinance programmes, the aim is to create sustainable communities that can stand on their own two feet. The programmes improve health, education, farming, water provision and sanitation in the villages. The Hunger Project encourages people to use their democratic rights to gain influence over the decisions taken in their community. They work actively to increase equality by empowering women to become entrepreneurs and take seats in local government. So far, the Hunger Project has mobilised clusters of villages into 123 epicentres in 8 African countries. Through its Epicentre Strategy, the charity now reaches around 2 million people in Africa. |

Berns takes a stand
Berns Hotel has removed plastic straws from all of their services and will offer a biodegradable alternative. Eight million tons of plastic waste enters our oceans each year, and researches predict that it could triple in a decade. The plastic waste impacts our food chain and health. “With extending a ban on plastic straws we are making a small but significant step in playing our part in reducing plastic that damages the environment. The decision builds on the environmental sustainability programs we have in place.” Marcus Läth, Hotel Manager. Berns wants to take their responsibility and work long-term when it comes to sustainability and the environment. The hotel and restaurant are constantly working with minor improvements, which over time produce great results. We work mainly in four areas:
