History
The China Theatre “The house with the perfect views”
The China Theatre was built between 1926
and 1928. It opened October 18, 1928 with
the silent film Anna Karenina starring Greta Garbo
and John Gilbert. The screening was accompanied
by a seventeen men orchestra.
During the 1920’s Chinese culture was immensely
popular throughout Europe. The name China
emanated from a contemporary famous theatre
in San Francisco with the same name. Architect
Albin Stark was inspired in China when he paid a
visit in 1922 and was the second European who
was permitted to enter the Forbidden City in Beijing.
Alongside art by artist Ewald Dalskog the theatre
was decorated with Chinese art. The intarsia wood
décor on the entrance doors to the salon of Chinese
landscapes are worth mentioning. All paintings are
originals.
