“I discovered Sweden seven years ago. Thousands of pictures of people and places and things I love and beautiful abstractions”
Ruvan Wijesooriya (born 1977) is photographer based in New York known for his interactive and performance based exhibitions as well as his documentation of pop- and subcultures. The interest in Ruvan has grown over the last year as he’s worked for Burberry, British Vogue, released the photo book LCD (published end of 2012) and had his work exhibited on galleries in Paris, Oslo and New York.
Artists such as Ed Ruscha, Michael Bastian and Doug Aitken are some of his collectors.
The pictures shown at Berns are divided in two categories. The photos in the dining hall of Berns Asiatiska are from his coming book about Sweden, a poetic and atmospheric depiction with tones from the Swedish summer landscapes and wintery suburbs through an American perspective. The exhibition is presented in a conceptual manner providing a taste and feel of the series rather than revealing it all. The lobby of Berns Hotel features a more coherent and framed collection of photographic works from the latest ten years of Ruvan’s life. Friends, parties, landscapes and portraits are mixed with his distinctive tone.
