THE STORY ABOUT BERNS
Bringing the world to Stockholm since 1863.
Since the doors opened in 1863, Berns has been an oasis for curious cosmopolitans. By constantly presenting cutting edge events and challenging conventions we have been the Stockholmers’ own living room for over a century. World famous stars mix with up-and-coming artists, sophisticated businessmen and trendy media people.
The contrasts are mirrored in the extravagant halls that are decorated with gold and stucco that hold secret corners and scandalous stories. We offer you an air of the world 24 seven. Berns is a place to experience with all your senses.
Katthavet (the cat sea) is a ditch where foul smelling waste like fish scales, garbage and drowned cats, resides in the innermost of Nybroviken.
The construction of Berzelii Park is completed and a statue of the chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius himself adorns the park, representing an oasis that links the city.
Stockholm’s most skilled pastry chef, Heinrich Robert Berns, opens his newly built hall, Berns. It was the biggest and most classy hall Stockholmers had ever seen. There was a concert and a party hall, a café that served coffee, liquor, ice cream and pastries to the sound of the most popular orchestras in Stockholm.
One of Sweden’s biggest authors, August Strindberg, and his bohemian friends discuss politics and poetry all day long, in the room that is named after his most known novel, The Red Room. The book is published in 1879.
It’s the inauguration of the new hall, Stora Salongen that makes Berns the place to go for restaurant entertainment. On stage is Sweden’s first girl idol, Sigge Wulf.
Jacob Folcke employs three Chinese baton twirlers as chefs for Sweden’s first Chinese restaurant.
It’s the premiere for ”Hålligång,” one of the most successful chorus shows at Berns starring the popular Hasse och Tage and the singer Monica Zetterlund.
The Supremes and Aretha Franklin perform on stage.
Berns looks like a big building site. The entertainment palace is given a complete renovation and a new hotel part is built, in and behind, the old Berns.

It’s time for the video art gallery 2:35:1 to open its doors in the basement. Today it has become one of the best clubs in Stockholm with black screens around the whole room where some of the best DJs in town play.
Berns celebrates its 150th anniversary with prominent guests from the Swedish entertainment- and industrial life in attendance.
